Enable Ss to talk about obligations, using the Modal Verbs like “ can, must/ have to”.

Tecahing steps:
Step1. Preparation
1. Show Ss a picture of an invitation on TV.
T: Hello, everyone! Yesterday I got an invitation from my dear friend; she invited me to go to her birthday party. But I have something important to do. I’m studying for a test. I don’t know what to do. What should I say? Can you help me? …
2 Collect Ss’ suggestions.

Step2. Presentation
Present and write the topic of Unit9: Can you come to my party? on the Bb.
Present the response to the topic question:
―Sure, I’d love / like to.
―Sorry, I can’t. I have the flu.// too much homework to do.
―I’m sorry, I have to / must go to the doctor.// prepare for an exam
Present the Modal Verbs: can, can’t, have to, must
Tell Ss that these are all Modal Verbs. Can is used to make an invitation in a polite way in a general question. While must/ have to are used to make obligations to turn down an invitation.
Ask students to give their own reasons. Write the target phrases in 1a on the Bb. Have Ss read them aloud.
4. Write down the bold sentences on the Bb. Have Ss read and learn them well.

Step3. Practice of listeng
1. 1b. Ask Ss to look at the picture at P65. Tell them the events about Sun Ning. Sun Ning is having a party on Saturday afternoon. Now he is inviting some of his friends to the party. Can his friends come to his party then. Listen to the recording twice together and write the names next to the correct Ss in the picture. Who is a/b/c/d? Check the answers then.
2. Have Ss read the listening script together. Analyse any hard point for them.
3. Have Ss work in groups of 4 and role play the listening conversations.
Step4. Progress
Encourage to make similar conversations in teamwork, using can/ can’t, have to/ must to accept or decline their friends’ invitations. Make sure Ss can give reasonable responses to turn down the invitations.
Step5. Production
Rewrite about Sun Ning’s party
Step6. Homework
1. Copy the new words at P65-67
2. Collect as many weekend activities as possible. Tell what you can do, what you can’t do, why?

Teaching steps:
Step1.Preparation
Review of the listening in 1b. Ask questions about Sun Ning’s invitation.
e.g. -- Can Jenny come to his party?
--Yes, she can.
--Can Ted/Tim/ Kay/Anna/Wilson come to Sun Ning’s party on Saturday afternoon? Why?
--No, they can’t....
Ted can’t come to the party because he has to help his parents.
Tim can’t, either. Because he has to prepare for an exam then.
Wilson can’t, either. Because he has to go the doctor.
Anna can’t, either. Because she might have to meet her friend.
Kay can’t, either. Because she has the flu.

Encourage the Ss to narrate Sun Ning’s party in their own words, using can/ can’t and telling the reasons for decling the invitation.
e.g. Sun Ning is going to have a party on Saturday afternoon. He is inviting some of his good friends to his party. But only Jenny can go to his party. Ted can’t go to the party because he has to help his parents. Tim can’t either. Because he has to prepare for an exam....

Step2. Presentation
Present: ① either----也,用于否定句末。
Eg. You can’t go to the party. I can’t, either. 我也不能。
② might---may 的过去式。情态动词,表猜测,“也许,或许”might 的可能性更小。
E.g. I can’t go to your party because I might have to meet my friend.
Step3.Practice of listenting
1. Show the pictures in 2a. Tell Ss to listen to the sentences and complete the task of circling the words ―can // can’t in the brackets. Check the answers with Ss.
2. Let Ss read the chart in 2b. Play the recording again to finish the task filling the chart. Check the answers then.
3. Have Ss work in groups. Dicussing who can // can’t go to the party and tell why.

Step 4.Progress
Have Ss work in pairs. Encourage them to make their own invitation conversationgs. Write more reasons for turning down the invitations.
Role-play the conversation in 2d.

Step5. Grammar Foucs
Go through the sentences in the form. Explain any difficult part for Ss. Draw a conclusion to the Modal Verbs can/ can’t, may/might, have to/ must

Step6. Production
3c. Make a calendar for next week. Write down everything you have to do. Choose a day or a time to have a party. Then invite your classmates to your party.

Step7. Homework
Complete the exercises in 3a & 3b.
