Ask the way and show the direction in English.

学习者分析
Students have learnt English for one year, so they can make simple sentences with the tips of key words, and they are interested in English more than before that they can put what they have learnt in practice.

Language knowledge: 1.words: left, right, live, street, supermarket, beside, cinema; 2.phrases: excuse me, go straight on, turn left, turn right, next to; 3.sentences: Excuse me. Where’s…, please? You are welcome!


Language skills: 1. To make students recognize, understand and read the words: left, right, live, street, supermarket, beside, cinema; phrases: excuse me, go straight on, turn left, turn right, next to; sentences: Excuse me. Where’s…, please? You are welcome!
2. To enable students ask the way with the sentence “Excuse me. Where’s…, please?” show the direction with “Go straight on. Turn left. Turn right”; describe the places with “It’s next to…. It’s besides ….”; reply others’ thanks with “You’re welcome!”


Emotion & attitude: 1.To cultivate students the spirit of helping others.
2. Further enhance students’ enthusiasm for English learning.

Teaching Important and difficult points(教学重点及难点)
Students know how to use the sentence “Excuse me. Where’s…, please?” to ask the way and “Go straight on. Turn left. Turn right” to show the direction.
Students can describe the places with “It’s next to…. It’s besides ….” Students can make a difference between the words: left and right.

reading pen, CAI, words card, a toy cat, a toy dog, a box, a magic hat, simple maps with lines of “go straight on, turn left, turn right”

Teaching Innovation

To set up some situations of real life to practice the main sentences in this unit, because after learning this unit, students know how to ask the way and show the direction in English. It is very helpful for them to practice English when they meet foreigners asking ways who join in the 45th FIG ARTISTIC GYMNASTICS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP in NANNING.

Step 1: Lead-in (2mins.)
1. Say hello to the Ss with full passion.
2. Play a magic game to review “where” and the four places: in, on, under, behind.
Teacher wears a magic hat and takes out a magic box with a toy cat inside.
T: Malimalihong! Where is the cat?
Ss: It’s in/on/under/behind the box.

To remind students to focus in class.

Students are very interested in playing games that can make them go through the old knowledge to new knowledge effectively.


Step 2: Pre-task(5 mins.)
Ask students to watch the video of part 1 and tell “Where is the boy?
Present the words “left” and” right” and make students understand the meaning with the actions of “left hands up” an” “right hands up”.
Practice the words “left” and “right”:
Teacher writes “left” on the left of the blackboard and “right” on the right of the blackboard.
Students follow teacher to read the two words.
Students read by themselves.
Students do the actions of “left hands up” an” “right hands up” with the orders from teacher.

1. It will be interesting for students to understand the text by watching video.
2. Doing and saying can make students understand the words vividly.
3. Presenting and practicing the words “left” and “right” at the very beginning will be helpful for students to learn the next part of this lesson.

Step 3: While-task (15mins.)
1.Show a toy dog and ask students:
T: What happened to it? What’s its name?
Ss read part two quickly and answer:
Ss: It’s lost. Its name is Doudou.
Students learn the word “lost”.
2.Play the video and ask students:
T: Where does Doudou live?
Ss: No.2 Park Street.
T: Yes. Doudou lives at No. 2 Park Street.
Teacher emphasizes “at” and “No. ” in this sentence.
3.Make students read the text sentence by sentence following the reading pen ,then teacher write and ask:
T: Where’s No.2 Park Street?
Students answer the questions and do the actions in groups:
S1: Turn left.
S2: Go straight on.
S3: Turn right.
4. Practice: Turn left. Go straight on. Turn right.
(1)Teacher show the marks with words card and read and then students follow;
(2)Students read together, in groups and one by one.
(3) Teacher do the actions of “turn left, go straight on, turn right” and say then students follow;
(4)Teacher say and students do;
(5)Student say and students do;
(6) Students practice in pairs.
(7) Finish part 3 of students’ book.
5.Students read the text together and teacher emphasizes the meaning of “next to, beside”
 1. To make students learn about the text from the easy question with the lovely toy they like.

2. It is more interesting for students to watch a cartoon
video after they read this text generally.
3. Reading pen is good for students to have standard pronunciation.
4. Making use of TPR to train the verb phrases for students can build up a active atmosphere which is helpful for the effective class.
5. Difficult points of language knowledge are emphasized alone can attract students’ attention.

Step 4: Post-task (5 mins)
Teacher adds “Excuse me.” ”please” “Thank
you so much” and “You’re welcome” on the blackboard and tells students they are the sentences for asking way and showing direction. Then the whole class read the sentences.
2. Teacher invites two groups of students to read the text in roles.
 1. Presenting the complete sentences after students learning the whole text reflects the process in an orderly way and step by step.
2. Reading in roles is to make students feel like in the real situation. 

Step 5: Task (10mins)
 1. Finish part 4 of students’ book in pairs. Then invites three pairs to demonstrate.
2. Set up eight situations with the real place of Nanning and let students to discuss that how to ask the way and show the direction. Students are divided into eight groups; two of them will represent their group to show the play to all the students.
1. It is easy for the whole class to finish the task on the book which can transit students to begin a more difficult task logically.
2. Group discussion will help students build up the spirit of teamwork.
Real situation will make students put what they have learnt into practice.

Summarize (1 min)
 Remind students how to ask way and show direction with the sentences on the blackboard and ask them to read together.
Reviewing promptly is good for students to memorise the important points of the language knowledge.

Homework (1 min) Tell the students to draw a simple map which is from school to their home and practice the dialogues with each other.

教学反思:Advantages:
1. Playing the magician to help students to review the old knowledge can attract students attention at the very beginning of the class;
2. Making use of various ways for students to learn and practice can enhance the fun of class;
3. Setting up real situation for students is helpful for them to put what they have learnt into practice.
Disadvantages:
1. Teaching content is rich but time is limited that not every student has chance to show their work to the class;
2. Blackboard-writing is clean but not interesting enough for the students in grade four.
