take up: 拿起; 开始; 从事;继续

as a result 结果,因此 (as a consequence ,finally,eventually,therefore)

tolerate vt. 容忍,忍受
I cannot tolerate your bad manners.
Our teacher won’t tolerate any cheating on exams.
stand, bear, endure, tolerate这些动词均含“忍受”之意。
stand: 口语用词,常可与bear换用,但
侧重指经受得起。(经受)
bear: 强调容忍,是普通用语。
endure: 书面用词,指长时间忍受痛苦
和不幸,着重体力或意志力的坚
强不屈服。(忍耐不屈)
tolerate: 指以自我克制的态度,对待令
人反感或厌恶的东西,含默认宽
容意味。(宽容)
4. Hit by a lack of fresh air, my head ached.
lack: n. 缺乏, 无
The plant died for a lack of water.

lack: v. 缺乏, 不足
He is good at his job but he seems to lack confidence.
I don't seem to lack anything now.

lack, want, absence, shortage这些名词均含“缺乏,不足”之意。
lack: 普通用词,指部分或完全的缺少。(欠缺)
want: 指完全或短缺某物,侧重缺少之
物是必需的东西。使用范围比lack窄些。
absence: 指某物根本不存在或完全短缺,或
某人虽存在,但未到现场。(缺席)
shortage: 指不足,但侧重达不到规定的、
需要的或已知应有的数量。(不充足)
He did not get the promotion for want of judgment. (只因缺少)
His long absence raised fears about his safety.
There was a shortage of oxygen at the top of the mountain.
